Indiana Community Spouse Resource Allowance (CSRA) Calculator

Indiana Community Spouse Resource Allowance Calculator

When one spouse needs nursing home care and applies for Medicaid, Indiana law protects a share of the couple's savings for the at-home spouse (also called the "community spouse"). Use this calculator to estimate how much the at-home spouse gets to keep. This calculator is for educational purposes only and does not constitute legal or financial advice. Results are estimates only

Step 1 — What doesn't count
Some assets are typically not counted by Medicaid
Before adding up assets, it helps to know what Medicaid typically does not count. The following are often not included, though exceptions may apply.
  • Primary home where the at-home spouse lives
  • One vehicle exempt regardless of value or whose name is on the title, when used by the at-home spouse
  • Household belongings furniture, clothing, appliances, personal items
  • Prepaid funeral or burial plan when set up as an irrevocable prepaid plan
  • Term life insurance policies with no cash value
  • Small whole life policy whole life with a face value of $1,500 or less

What does count — add these up for the next step:

Checking and savings accounts
CDs and money market accounts
Stocks, bonds, mutual funds
IRAs and 401(k)s
Additional vehicles
Vacation home or rental property
Cash value of life insurance (over $1,500)
Annuities that are not in the payout phase

Step 2
Total countable assets owned by both spouses combined
Using only the items from the "What does count" list above, add up everything owned by both spouses. Do not include the home, one vehicle, or anything else from the list above. For now, list assets that are owned by either spouse or jointly owned by both spouses.

Step 3
Has the spouse who needs care been admitted to a facility yet?
Not yet / planning ahead
Yes, currently in a facility
Indiana takes a "snapshot" of the couple's total countable assets on the date the spouse who needs care is first admitted to a facility. The calculation is based on that snapshot figure, which may be different from what the couple has today. This calculator uses the amount entered above.

Step 4
What is the at-home spouse's monthly income?
This helps determine whether Indiana may allow the at-home spouse to keep additional assets on top of the standard amount. If this is being filled out on behalf of a parent or loved one, enter the at-home spouse's income here.
$ / month

Include Social Security, pension, annuity payments, or other regular income in the at-home spouse's name only. Leave blank if unknown.

Indiana's asset protection rules are complex. A planning strategy may allow the at-home spouse to keep significantly more than this estimate shows. Book a free 30-minute consultation with Kubik Legal.
